From the origin story of their businesses to the ways they allowed themselves to grow as entrepreneurs, our Female Founders series gives a view into the lives of successful women from a variety of industries. Join us for today’s feature, Melissa Pond, offering a behind the scenes look at some of what she has done to succeed so far, advice for those starting off, and plans for the future.
What’s your business and how did you get started?
Melissa J Pond LLC is a grant writing and strategic growth consultancy that helps mission-driven organizations, small businesses, and government agencies secure funding and build community impact. Drawing on more than 15 years in municipal government and nonprofit management, I specialize in positioning clients for success through clear messaging, strong narratives, and data-driven strategies.
After earning a Master’s in Nonprofit Management from Northeastern University and spending over a decade managing federal grants for a city government, I saw firsthand how many organizations struggled to articulate their impact and access sustainable funding. In 2022, I founded Melissa J Pond LLC to bridge that gap—helping leaders transform their vision into fundable plans and measurable outcomes. Our firm has helped clients collectively secure over $1 million in grants while strengthening their visibility, partnerships, and long-term growth strategies.
What is one thing you’re really proud of that you’ve created or accomplished?
I’m incredibly proud that once I got my business off the ground, my clients collectively secured over $1 million in grant funding within just 18 months. That milestone represents more than financial success—it reflects the real impact of helping mission-driven organizations tell their stories effectively and access the resources they need to thrive. Knowing that my work directly contributes to community growth and sustainability is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
What’s your favorite thing about being a business owner?
My favorite part of being a business owner is that networking is truly part of the job. I get to meet incredible people, learn about their passions, and explore new ways to collaborate that I never could have imagined before. Every conversation opens a door—to new ideas, partnerships, or experiences—and that constant sense of connection and discovery keeps my work exciting. I love that no two days look the same and that building relationships is not just good for business—it’s deeply fulfilling.
What is the boldest thing you’ve ever done in business?
The boldest thing I’ve ever done in business was raising my paddle at a gala live auction to bid thousands on a Red Sox suite—without a clear plan, just a bold vision. I saw it as more than a baseball game; I envisioned it as a one-of-a-kind networking experience for women entrepreneurs. That single moment of courage turned into an unforgettable event that brought together powerhouse women, fostered collaboration, and opened new doors for partnerships. It reminded me that bold moves in business often start with intuition and faith in the bigger picture.
What’s one thing you’re currently excited about for the future of your business?
I’m excited about expanding into hosting retreats that give women entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders dedicated time and space to work on strategy and content creation. So many business owners spend their days in constant motion, serving others, and rarely have the opportunity to step back and focus on their own growth. These retreats will be designed to spark creativity, refine messaging, and develop actionable plans—all in an inspiring setting that encourages collaboration and fresh thinking.
What’s your best business advice you would give to other women?
Network as much as possible—there’s no shortcut. Success doesn’t happen behind a screen; it happens through genuine relationships. Get out, meet people, and stay curious about what they do. Every conversation is a chance to learn something new, open a door, or connect with someone who might change the trajectory of your business. The more you show up and build real connections, the more opportunities will find you.
