Elena Koutsoukos of Soma + Soul Skincare

What’s your business and how did you get started?

My grandfather lost his battle with cancer on July 9th, 2020. The family was brought together under unpleasant circumstances to pay tribute to my pappou’s life. Among the many stories I’ve heard about my pappou was that my great-grandmother made soap at her village in Megalopoli. I tried to find the recipe, so I traveled to Peloponnesus to get the recipe. I was lucky enough to meet with locals and witness how they make the soap. And then it hit me… Whenever I walked into a beauty retailer there wasn’t any Clean Greek Skincare, and I always wondered why. Greek ingredients are the best for your skin due to the climate and soil density. So I decided to create the first Clean Greek Skincare line: Soma+Soul.

The core of Soma+Soul is summed up by a Greek saying, “When you treat the body, you treat the mind, you treat the soul.”

Our Products are:

  • Clean
  • Cruelty-free (Leaping Bunny program)
  • Sustainable
  • Vegan
  • and made with Greek ingredients in a small laboratory in Kavala, Greece.

You might be wondering what clean means. Clean for Soma+Soul means transparency in sourcing ingredients, sustainable packaging, giving back to nature (partnering with NGO), ethically tested and not just natural but nontoxic.

What’s your favorite thing about being a business owner?

No day is the same and I never get bored! There is always something new, either a challenge to face, or a win to celebrate. But most importantly I do what I love; creating safe products for women and men to use.

What keeps you motivated in the midst of challenges?

Skincare has always been a passion of mine. Therefore, creating my own skincare line has been a dream come true. Especially when I was able to combine my passion with my culture and make Greek ingredients famous around the world. Τhat’s what keeps me going every time I face a challenge.

Tell us about your morning or evening routine.

I have to wake up early everyday as the laboratory is in Greece and we have a 7 hour difference. I wake up at 5:30 am, shower, have breakfast and start working. At around 12:00 pm I go for a walk at the beach to refresh.

What’s one thing you’re currently working toward or expected growth for the future?

Our Mission is to create whole-body alignment through beautifully simple skincare that prioritizes wellbeing and goddess-level self-care. We are currently working on expanding in different stores in Greece and the US. We are currently in three stores in Greece, two stores in MA (Pathos Salon in Newbury and Aura Spa in Ludlow) and you can find us online through our website and through Flip.

What’s your best business advice you would give to other women?

NEVER GIVE UP! People, even the ones close to you, will question your idea and won’t believe in you. But the only thing you need is to believe in yourself. Yes, it will be very challenging, with ups and downs, but never give up because your hard work and dedication will be rewarded.
