A new season offers a fresh start, opening the door for endless possibilities. It’s a natural time to not only assess where you are but to dream about where you would like to be and set goals accordingly. However, rigid resolutions and detailed long-term plans are not the only path forward– no matter what advertisements you have seen! Sometimes, the most powerful change comes through small, but strategic pivots.
So… You are probably wondering… What is a pivot?
A pivot is a subtle yet purposeful shift in direction, priorities, or approach. The intention is to enable progress– a strategy to synthesize the best of what currently is with the best of what could potentially be. Pivot power comes from aligning with and leveraging existing strengths and assets, not starting completely from scratch. Making use of what you have removes the pressure of grand, overnight transitions and builds on the things you already have that are working well for you. If you were out sailing, you might adjust the sails on the boat to catch the wind more effectively. A pivot is the same idea. Working with the strengths and assets of what you already have to “catch the wind” more effectively in your business or life.
I know your next question. Why pivot?
Pivots provide the gift of clarity. They provide a chance to cut through the cutter. And a chance for you to grow. In the beginning, select one key change. You can always pivot again later if you need to. A pivot will stop you from staying stuck. It brings something new to routines that have become boring or not working anymore. It gets change started. Even the slight pivot of ending my warm showers with one minute of cold water has helped me feel more awake without coffee! I am not sure about any other benefits yet, but I started just for that one!
Pivots allow for flexibility because rigid plans break under stress and duress. Rather than succumb to rigidity, a pivot leaves room to maneuver around obstacles and allow you to feed your motivation. It feels doable. Not overwhelming. Small, forward progress that keeps your energy and enthusiasm high while you build momentum. One pivot makes the next one easier, and so on the cycle continues. Each shift unlocks the next, enabling bigger leaps over time.
Pivots maximize limited resources. A pivot elegantly optimizes what you have instead of requiring expensive overhauls. Creatively, you can use the stuff you already have instead of needing big, expensive changes all at once. Pivots are masterful at breathing new life into what works and focusing on your strongest skills without breaking your budget or bank.
How will you know when it is time to pivot? Some telltale signs could include hitting a plateau – Progress stalling means it’s time for a new angle. Maybe you are feeling uninspired – Boredom hints that novelty could re-energize you. I know I feel that way at least once a year about my TikTok content. Once I pivot the delivery style to keep it fresh, everything changes.
Pivot Power Moves
Here is the strategy for creating small but powerful pivots.
Adjust Your Professional Focus
This could look like expanding your niche, offering new services, or developing new areas of expertise. Perhaps you could build on offerings that already sell well or experiment with new marketing tactics. If you have no results after 60 days, it may not be working, so it’s work pivoting again and trying something new! Retain what converts while layering in new outreach and experiments to drive fresh connections and perspective.
Tweak Habits and Routines
Preserve what fuels you while amending what’s become ineffective. Evaluate and refine your practices over time, and even consider revamping spaces with a cosmetic update to refresh the energy. Simple practices like rearranging furniture to renew creativity can make a huge difference. Everything can intentionally expand your network to nurturing relationships that are already strong are ways to tweak your habits and routines.
Learn New Skills Strategically
Add capabilities complementary to your foundation– not random skills! Refocus your personal brand and evolve your messaging while staying authentic to who you are. Be sure to clarify your unique value and embrace saying no with pure intention. Look to pare down obligations that are no longer serving you. Make space for what matters most. When you pivot and refresh one part, it naturally makes everything else better too. As the momentum grows and flows, this allows even bigger change to happen.
The beauty of pivoting is that it keeps some things familiar, while it also brings newness. Give yourself the freedom of the pivot. Embrace it. Be courageous. Small yet intentional shifts keep progress flowing, passion alive and possibilities expanding. Pivoting clarifies your course, leverages existing strengths, and prevents stagnation, without requiring drastic reinvention.
I challenge you to embrace the power of subtle yet strategic pivots to propel you forward.
