From the origin story of their businesses to the ways they allowed themselves to grow as entrepreneurs, our Female Founders series gives a view into the lives of successful women from a variety of industries. Join us for today’s feature, Karissa Richtmyer, offering a behind the scenes look at some of what she has done to succeed so far, advice for those starting off, and plans for the future.
What’s your business and how did you get started?
I am a critical care registered nurse and mom of two daughters who wanted to change the ear piercing experience for the better. I’ve used my knowledge of sterile technique + optimal wound healing to offer a safe + kid friendly piercing experience. No guns or piercing devices, no busy malls or jewelry stores, and no intimidating tattoo shops! What you’ll find in my studio is lux pink vibes, cozy furniture, kid friendly touches, and more.
What is one thing you’re really proud of that you’ve created or accomplished?
I am the only independently operated nurse that has needle piercings in Massachusetts! I’m also the only licensed body art practitioner in my town of Medfield. I hold dual licenses: Registered Nurse and Body Art, and am certified in Critical Care Nursing, Body Piercing, and Permanent Makeup/Cosmetic Tattooing.
What’s your favorite thing about being a business owner?
I absolutely love meeting other moms/female business owners that I otherwise would not have met if I didn’t own a business! I’ve gained some incredible friendships and have been given the opportunity to learn about other unique small businesses in our community.
What is the boldest thing you’ve ever done in business?
I booked a venue to celebrate my one year anniversary in business back in February of 2024. I went all out with decorations, food, vendors etc and only 5 people showed up because it was a cold New England day in February!
What’s one thing you’re currently excited about for the future of your business?
I recently became certified in permanent makeup/cosmetic tattooing. I’m very excited to offer this new service to my business and to be able to help people who have lost eyebrow hairs due to chronic illness like alopecia or chemotherapy!
What’s your best business advice you would give to other women?
It’s going to be hard, your business isn’t going to “be for everyone” but don’t ever give up! What you’re doing matters and holds value.
