From the origin story of their businesses to the ways they allowed themselves to grow as entrepreneurs, our Female Founders series gives a view into the lives of successful women from a variety of industries. Join us for today’s feature, Christina Gravina, offering a behind the scenes look at some of what she has done to succeed so far, advice for those starting off, and plans for the future.

What’s your business and how did you get started?

BILT is a nonprofit organization committed to providing quality services for primarily teens and adults with developmental disabilities. We have an array of services from therapeutic services, to fun events, sexuality coaching and more. I got started with my company in 2019 after working in the field for 10 years and seeing that there was improvement that could occur with the service models I had worked in.

What is one thing you’re really proud of that you’ve created or accomplished?

I’m really proud of our organization passing rigorous state audits and accreditations. In 6 years while we have grown from serving 2 people to 150 but we are still striving to have quality services, satisfied individuals who are rewarding their goals and support staff members.

What’s your favorite thing about being a business owner?

I enjoy being able to be creative with programming, help individuals and families to have flexible, high quality services and that I get to take part in choosing my team, who are all rockstars!

What is the boldest thing you’ve ever done in business?

Invest in the brick and mortar location. It was a big risk when we were operating all remotely but I felt it was important to create a community.

What’s one thing you’re currently excited about for the future of your business?

Expanding our services and expanding our location.

What’s your best business advice you would give to other women?

Don’t give up. It’s not easy, it’s lonely at times, and can feel isolating. Sometimes it feels like you are up against the impossible but if you break down what’s “impossible” you often can get through things step by step.
