Coaching Corner Transitions Well Done

with Madjeen Lorthe, M.Ed, ICF-ACC Founder & Principal

What services do you offer as a coach?

I provide personalized coaching programs to guide women of color who feel overwhelmed, burned out, and trapped in their current circumstances. Through these programs, I help them navigate significant life and career transitions with confidence and clarity. I focus on various aspects including goal setting, mindset shifts, skill development, and self-care strategies that are tailored to the unique needs and challenges faced by women of color in today’s workplace environments.

What inspired you to become a coach?

As a Black immigrant, I grew up chasing the American Dream and witnessed my parents working tirelessly in multiple jobs to provide for our family. Despite making strides professionally, I realized I was trapped in a job that didn’t align with my purpose or values. I was working excessive hours and fearing that everything would collapse if I eased up. My journey of self-discovery led me to resign and reclaim my truth. Ultimately, I rediscovered my passion for guiding others. I became a certified life and career transition coach with over 20 years of experience in the nonprofit and mental health field to support women of color in navigating similar challenges and reclaiming their power.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of coaching for you?

The most rewarding part of coaching is witnessing my clients’ profound transformations. It is incredibly fulfilling to see them break free from limiting beliefs, gain clarity on their goals, and step into their power. I find immense joy in seeing clients become their own catalysts for positive change in their lives and witnessing the ripple effects of their success as they navigate significant life and career transitions with confidence and resilience.

What’s the best transformation you’ve seen lately in a client?

Recently, I worked with a client who was feeling stuck in a toxic work environment and struggling to break free from the cycle of burnout and overwhelm. Through our coaching partnership, she gained the courage to set boundaries, prioritize self-care, and explore new career opportunities aligned with her passions and values. Witnessing her transition from feeling trapped and disempowered to embracing a sense of agency and fulfillment was truly inspiring.

What advice would you give to women in business?

My advice to fellow women in business, especially women of color, is to honor your authenticity and embrace your worth. In a world that often imposes narrow standards of success and achievement, dare to define success on your own terms. Trust in your intuition, advocate for yourself unapologetically, and seek out communities and mentors who uplift and empower you. Remember that your lived experience is valid, and your voice matters in shaping a more inclusive and equitable future.

How do you like to start your day?

I prefer a slow, spacious start to my day. Although I wake up early, I like to ease into it. I set aside time for meditation and journaling to cultivate a sense of presence and intentionality. This enables me to show up fully present and grounded for my family and business. I’m still working on adding physical activity to my morning routine, but I find more time for it on the weekends.
